A typical rocky shore can be divided into a sprayzone or splash zone also known as the supratidal zone, which is above the spring high-tide line and is covered by water only during storms, and an intertidal zone, which lies between the high and low tidal extremes.
The subtidal zone is the region of the shore below MHWS. This part is only ever uncovered by exceptionally low spring tides. It is a fully marine zone but, being near to the sea surface, it has a higher light intensity, dissolved oxygen concentration and wave action than the seafloor in deeper water. The rocky shore is a habitat of different intertidal zones.
